I tried to do a meme, but...

I tried to do one of those character-list memes on InfiniteViking's journal and totally overran the comment limit.

So y'all are the (un)lucky beneficiaries. ;-)

'Write down twelve people, then look at the questions and answer them by the numbers.' I mean, you know the drill.

1: Odo
2: Vimes
3: J'onn
4: Jamie
5: The Brigadier
6: Uhura
7: Cinderella
8: Captain America
9: Janet
10: Holmes
11: Nancy Blackett
12: Sam Gamgee

What they do:

Who would make a better college professor, 6 or 11? Lt Uhura, definitely. Nancy Blackett is not a college professor type, although more pirates in my classes would not necessarily be a bad thing!

12 sends 8 on a mission. What is it and does it succeed? Sam Gamgee sends Captain America on a mission? COOL. I should probably have left Sam out, because this is like writing fic and my brain refuses to fic LOTR at all, but just the idea of Sam sending Captain America on a mission... SO MUCH AWESOME. Better yet, they can go on a mission together! :D

What would be 9's favorite book? Janet Fraiser's favorite book... lol, I probably have a more serious answer to this somewhere, but right now I'm going to say it's a life of Napoleon just for laughs. *g*

Would it make more sense for 2 to swear fealty to 6 or the other way around? Vimes does not do the swearing fealty thing. Neither does Uhura. I don't think this one will work... but they can team up! (The cracky crossover potential OF AWESOME is the real reason I can never ignore these memes.)

For some reason 5 is looking for a roommate. Should (s)he share a studio apartment with 9 or 10? The Brig's roommate: Janet Fraiser or Sherlock Holmes? PUT THEM ALL THREE IN A ROOM AND WATCH THE EPICNESS EXPLODE. I think the Brig would get on better long-term with Janet than with Holmes, though; she's tidier.

5, 2, and 12 have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss? The Brig, Vimes, and Sam Gamgee? SO MUCH AWESOME. I think Sam is slightly bewildered, but being Sam (therefore both sensible and a hobbit), keeps his head down and concentrates on the food while Vimes and the Brig have THE MOST UTTERLY EPIC COP-VS-SOLDIER ETHICS ARGUMENT EVER.

(...and I just realized that cop-vs-soldier ethics are exactly what my entire not!NaNo is about, or rather one of the things it is about, and novels are confusing, yes? *makes note*)

3 challenges 10 to a duel. What happens? J'onn J'onzz challenges Sherlock Holmes... TO A DUEL? Somehow I suspect there is a lot more going on here than meets the eye. But that is an amazing combination, yes. I love crossover two-handers.

If 1 stole 8's most prized possession how would (s)he get it back? Odo snitched Cap's shield? That's easy - Odo will give it back as soon as he doesn't need it anymore. It was probably for something short and obvious anyway, such as deflecting phaser fire (Cap's shield is TOTALLY indestructible, you just know not even a phaser on disintegrate can scratch that baby).

*wants Captain-America-on-DS9 fic now*

Suggest a title for a story in which 7 and 12 both attain what they most desire. Cinderella and Sam Gamgee? Er. "Happily Ever After" is the only possibility. (I am so rubbish at titles.)

What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted 4 and 1 to work together? ODO AND JAMIE. Er. "The TARDIS lands on Deep Space Nine"? ODO AND JAMIE. *needs to watch more Jamie and then write a massive DS9 crossover with EVERYBODY AND ODO*

If 7 visited you for a weekend, how would you get along? ...Cinderella? Um, well, I could picture having way more fun with any of the others, but I'm sure she has a personality. I always wanted to be her when I was tiny, so I guess we should get along okay? *boggled*

If you could command 3 to perform any task or service, what would it be? Eee, J'onn J'onzz. My other shapeshifty "last of his kind" awesome policeman-type dude (who's also a telepath and can fly and phase through walls and some other stuff). Um - probably "turn into a dragon and TAKE ME FLYING PLEASE!" Why a dragon I don't know, because he's allergic to fire, except that he'd make a really classy-looking dragon (that's him in the icon).

Does anybody on your friends list draw or write 11? Nancy Blackett? LOL, no! I don't think so. Except I made [profile] lost_spook write her that one time for the crossover meme where I had her meet Liz Shaw FOR THE WIN.

(Ack, I need to write Lost_spook Liz-meets-Q fic still...)

If 2 had to choose sides between 4 and 5, who would it be? If Vimes had to choose sides between Jamie and the Brigadier... it would depend entirely on the issue in question. I'm saying Jamie, though, because Vimes has that whole anti-establishment thing going on to an extent, and he and Jamie would get on like a house afire!

What might 10 shout when charging into battle? Sherlock Holmes? Well, stretching the definition of "battle" and also "shout", he has canonically been known to remark "The game is afoot!"

(I cannot believe Moff et al changed that to "The game is on". So sissy. OTOH, "Meretricious" - "Happy New Year" is still THE BEST EXCHANGE IN HISTORY and I am laughing my head off here just thinking about it.

...that's my new journal title. Maybe subtitle too; I'll have to decide.)

If you chose a song to represent 8 what would it be? Oh, no question. Well, lots of choices, but "The Star-Spangled Banner" has to top the list. CAPTAIN AMERICA ILU.

1, 6, and 12 are having dim sum at a restaurant. There is only one scallion pancake left, and they all reach for it at the same time. Who gets to eat it? Uhura. I'm having to go with S5!Odo here, otherwise he wouldn't be eating in the first place, but Odo and Sam Gamgee would both still defer to a lady in the matter of scallion pancakes.

(Besides, then they can all go... somewhere... and Sam can cook more pancakes and they can chat companionably till all hours. I have this whole AU percolating in my head where the "Tribble-ations" Niner crew got stuck in the 23rd century and had to be all space!smuggler pirate-y trying to get the parts to build a widget to go home without b0rking the timestream. Mainly because THEY PUT WORF AND ODO IN CYRANO JONES'S COAT(S) LOLWUT. But anyway, Uhura and Odo and Sam Gamgee are suddenly taking over my brain with the power of their cumulative soft-spoken awesome.)

What would 5 most likely be arrested for? The Brig? Letting the Doctor drive. (That one was easy. *g*)

What is 6's secret? Uhura has a secret? Of course she does. I just don't know it because the power of her awesome is such that she's better at keeping secrets than that. ;-)

If 11 and 9 were racing towards a destination, who would get there first? ...Nancy and Janet. Wow. Nancy, I think, simply because her legs are longer and Janet isn't primarily an athlete.

3 and 7 tell conflicting versions of events. Which is more reliable? Uh... I think I might actually have to go with Cinderella on this one. J'onn does have the whole Enigmatic thing going, and if he was manipulating you for a good reason, he's got the DC world's best poker face (sorry Batsy!)

1 and 9 reluctantly team up to save the world from the threat posed by 4's sinister secret organization. 11 volunteers to help them, but it is later discovered that 11 is actually a spy for 4. Meanwhile, 4 has kidnapped 12 in an attempt to force their surrender. Following the wise advice of 5, they seek out 3, who gives them what they need to complete their quest. What title would you give this fic? Name three people on your friends list who might read it. Name one person who should write it.

May I first register my undying love for this question? O_O Now to drive myself completely crazy answering it:

Jamie's sinister secret organization threatens the world. Odo and Janet (AAAAAAH ODO AND JANET, THE UNIVERSE CANNOT GET ANY MORE AWESOME) reluctantly team up to stop him. Nancy Blackett is spying for Jamie but ostensibly helping Odo and Janet (you know, she'd totally do that). Jamie has kidnapped Sam Gamgee - oy, bad Jamie - to force the others to surrender. The Brig advises them to seek out J'onn J'onzz, who... pretty much walks into Jamie's secret lair through a wall, breaks Sam out with his super-strength, clouds everyone's minds with his telepathy, and walks back out through the front door carrying both Sam and Jamie over his shoulders. There's a reason J'onn has to be allergic to fire to keep him from totally taking over the Justice League's "last resort" spot from Superman. XD

If you had to walk home through a bad neighbourhood late at night, would you feel safer in the company of 7 or 8? Captain America. Definitely. Cinderella is a nice person, but not so much with the protecting people. I'd wind up protecting her.

This is SO AWESOME. I wish I knew who all those people are, 'cos so far I only understand half of this. The Brig getting arrested for letting the Doctor drive, lol.

Also... this one nearly killed me:

Woops. That was only partially supposed to be in bold. One day I'll get the hang of those html codes, I swear :P

Who are the ones you don't know? I could probably give you enough of a character intro to be going on with. ;-)
May. 19th, 2011 09:12 pm (UTC)
Euh. Well... Odo, Vimes, J'onn, Uhura, Janet and Nancy Blankett. See, that's exactly half of them XD I've never seen SG-1 or DS-9 or whatever, and I've only read three Discworld novels so far, so I haven't met Vimes yet. :P

Oh, you must hurry up and get to Vimes! HE IS THE AWESOMEST. ;D Well, him and Granny Weatherwax and Death and the Librarian... *g*

* Odo and Vimes and J'onn are my three awesome snarky incorruptible police-type guys from three different universes. They're all sort of cranky antisocial loners who care more about justice than anything else and who secretly love little kids. *has not got a type, noooo precious* ;-)

* J'onn is extremely dignified, Martian (thus green), and has the coolest deadpan sense of humor in the multiverse. On Justice League: The Animated Series he's voiced by this guy with a REALLY DEEP VOICE, like "James Earl Jones sounds squeaky now" deep, and he's one of these offhandedly selfless characters that are also *I still don't have a type*. ;-)

* Odo's natural form is orange CGI goo, he sleeps in a bucket, that's him in the icon. (He has trouble with noses.) Absolutely adorable in a grumpy sort of way. He's more of a martial-law, fascist person than the other two... aagh Vimes and Odo I need to write that fic now! o_O

* Vimes is a short scruffy-looking cynical Ankh-Morpork cop who starts out drunk. READ THE BOOKS. ;-) He doesn't think much of career soldiers, but in other respects he has a fair amount of Brigliness in his own way, so him vs the Brig would be FIREWORKS EVERYWHERE.

* Uhura: spiffy awesome communications officer on the original Star Trek. Black, female, classiest lady in seven galaxies. She'd make an excellent college professor or anything else she turned her hand to, and is probably the only person ever to look (and be) thoroughly kicka** while wearing a velour sports bra and miniskirt with lamé sash in that one episode. One half of TV's first interracial kiss - the other half was Captain Kirk, obvs.

* Janet: extremely short (1.6m) female military doctor, made of pure awesome. So cool she doesn't even have to do much of anything to intimidate Marines, pwn bureaucrats, and generally be THAT FANTASTIC - but she does anyway. Cures alien diseases, tells off generals, the whole nine yards.

* Nancy Blackett: from a 1930s British book series, Swallows and Amazons. Pirate captain tomboy who sails on Lake Windermere and plays pirate captain. Way cooler than that sounds. Made a fantastic crossover with Liz Shaw, which I can't find atm because I am slightly fail. o_O

Did that help any?

Er. Wow. XD I should start watching all those shows if I ever find the time, haha. Am certainly going to continue with the Discworld novels; I've got the first ten, but due to bad time management I've only gotten round to reading the first three. I love them, they're hilarious. I think I'm going to like Vimes, haha :D

cranky antisocial loners who care more about justice than anything else and who secretly love little kids

This makes me wonder if you've ever read Transmetropolitan?
May. 31st, 2011 08:03 pm (UTC)
Never even heard of it. What is it?
Jun. 1st, 2011 02:00 am (UTC)
Transmetropolitan is a science-fiction series DC Comics used to publish, by Warren Ellis. (When I say "used to", it's one of the lucky ones that got to finish where the writer wanted it to, not where the publisher decided.) It's been collected in ten graphic novels, which are still in print.

It's set in an unnamed American city at some point in the future, and follows the adventures of crusading journalist Spider Jerusalem, his two assistants, and his long-suffering and sarcastic editor. "Cranky antisocial loner who cares about justice more than anything else and who secretly loves little kids" is not a bad description of Spider.

(I should note, though, that Transmetropolitan was published by DC's mature-readers imprint, and is not short of bad language, sexual references, recreational drug use, and realistically-depicted violence.)

OMG, I would buy tickets to the Vimes versus Brig show. Also, Liz-meets-Q fic!!! Make it happen! I wants! :)
May. 20th, 2011 09:11 pm (UTC)
I would buy tickets too! :D

(I'll try... *g*)

Hee, these are awesome! I do love reading the results of this sort of meme. (My favourite? Totally the last one. Oh, Cinderella. So true.)
May. 20th, 2011 04:21 am (UTC)
Sam sends Captain American on a mission. Do you know how happy the mere thought of this has made me?
May. 20th, 2011 12:33 pm (UTC)
Almost as happy as it made me? :DDDDD
May. 20th, 2011 09:52 am (UTC)
It is okay about not writing Liz and Q, if you write that dinner party with the Brig and the two Sams. :-D I kind of have the same reaction to LOTR fic, and I (hypocritically, given I wrote one...) throw in Discworld to that, too. However Vimes and the Brig and Sam Gamgee? Oohh... Yes.

(The icon is because I am almost as happy at the thought of this as I was to find a happy Ben in colour icon.) :-)
